FITT Hudson Networking event
In the fantastic Hudson Boardroom on Thursday 8th October with views over Darling Harbour and watching the sunset, 70+ FITT members enjoyed a huge spread of food and champers (thanks to Cliftons) and playing a networking game that related well to the topics for the evening – happiness, resilience, optimism. There was a special presentation to Maggie Alexander, as a founding member has given 20 yrs of volunteer service to the FITT Steering Committee (SC).

Then Claire kicked off the evening with all about Happiness – the anchor theme being you can win the lottery to be happy for a year or two, but research reveals ‘happiness’ wears off – real happiness is about loving what you do! Claire provided us some ‘happiness’ research and insights that she uses in her coaching at Hudson and some practical techniques to assist. Next Diane Rogers, a familiar face to FITT who teaches our Powerful Leadership courses, talked about the disruptive change that is happening in organisations today. Both speakers presented very enlightening material which was obvious to all that we only scratched the surface on what skills we need and that happiness is core to being
'change hardy.

IT Trends Networking Lunch
On Tuesday 18th of August, 2009, FITT held its annual IT Trends Networking Luncheon at the Harbours Edge on Darling Harbour. The event attracted 130 delegates who over two hours networked, lunched and heard from our speakers on the topic of “Is the future of IT up in the clouds?”
We were fortunate to have two fantastic speakers in Linda Price, the Group Vice President of Executive programs from Gartner, and Rhodi Burton, a Channel Manager from VMWare. Linda covered the necessary toolset the IT Manager of the future will have to be equipped with to meet the challenges of the future whilst Rhodi gave us an industry view what Cloud Computing actually is and how it fits in with the strategic picture of organisations. The afternoon was a great combination of food, networking and a view of the emerging trends in IT.

FITT High Potential Leadership for Career Advancement Workshop
What makes a good leader and how do I become one?
Those were just a couple of the questions answered by Diane Hansen at
the High Potential
Leadership for Career Advancement workshop held on Saturday 25 July 2009. Over the course of the day, Diane took a group of FITT members on a journey to discover their inner leader as well as skills and tips to increasing your leadership potential.
The day started with a fun exercise – drawing a picture to describe what embodies a successful leader. While the illustrations ranged from the ethereal to the material, all teams agreed on the core components that make up a successful leader. Throughout the day, the group had the opportunity to both discuss and debate examples of successful leadership as well as spending time on reflection to identify individual strengths and areas for development.
Attendees were unanimous in their appreciation to Diane for running the course and all went away from an intense but fun day having learned a thing or two about leadership and themselves.

Telstra FITT Senior Leadership Forum 'Creating Reflective Leaders' hosted and sponsored by Telstra
A very special event was hosted by Telstra on the evening of July 28th for FITT members and invited Telstra staff in leadership/management roles within IT&T to discuss
'Creating Reflective Leaders'. Held at the Telstra Experience Centre in Sydney, we were extremely fortunate to have the time of Paul Geason, the new Group Managing Director of Telstra Wholesale and Rachel Argaman, CEO of Toga Hospitality and a past Telstra Business Women Award Winner to discuss what it means to be a reflective leader and the leadership models that enable reflection, empowerment, meaning. It was one of the most insightful sessions that FITT has ever run based upon the amount of emails that came flooding in the next morning giving such great feedback.
The presentations from Paul and Rachel mixed latest theory, models and developments in leadership with practical examples and personal experiences on things they did (right and wrong!) and how they reflected, and really highlighted that often the quietest in the room can be the next leader! And that its not just about delivering on strategy, execution and capability but also the people element that forms the culture.
As Rachel said, culture 'eats strategy' any day – the best strategy will not succeed without it being compatible to the culture. We must thank the Telstra HR Staff for all their efforts and commitment to this event and its sister event in Melbourne. The whole event provided real insight into how we as women in IT&T can be better leaders not only for good of the business we are in, but for our staff and society in general. This was followed up by networking drinks, giving the attendees an opportunity to meet other like minded women working in the IT&T industry.
The feedback was overwhelming positive: 70% of the attendees rated the event
excellent and 22% rated the event good and 10% were no-shows. It was unfortunate that we had many more registrants than we had capacity for (and then we had a large number of no-shows so disappointing for those on the waiting list). We have asked in the feedback survey what time suits people most and the 5.30-7.30pm timeslot won hands down over lunch, breakfast and 6.30-8.30pm. Finally, FITT always welcomes other organisations to host events of this type either in Melbourne or Sydney so please email events@fitt.org.au if you think your organisation might be interested.

Telstra partnered with FITT for Leadership through Technology
The inaugural FITT Melbourne event was held at the swish Telstra Executive briefing centre and sponsored by Telstra. Michael Lawrey, Executive Director for Telstra Network & Technology, facilitated a panel discussion with past Telstra Business Women Award winners including Professor Margaret Abernethy - Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, and Director of the Melbourne Graduate School of Management, University of Melbourne, Kirsten MacKelden - Director and co-Founder of Indigo Media Group publisher of the 2007 'Magazine of the Year', Real Weddings, and Amy Sznicer – 2006 Young Business Womens award winner.
The panel discussion provided real insight into how these women were able to be so successful, and how they were able to juggle work, home and life balance.
This was followed up by networking drinks, giving the attendees an opportunity to meet other like minded women working in the IT&T industry.
The feedback was overwhelming positive: 75% of the attendees rated the event excellent and 29% rated the event good and 95% said they would goto another FITT event in Melbourne.
It was unfortunate that we had twice the number of people want to attend than we had capacity for so for those that missed out, we are working with another sponsor to host another FITT event in Melbourne. Events do take time and money and onground resources to run so we do rely upon sponsored hosts and their speakers to keep the events free-of-charge. Once our FITT Melbourne sub committee are in a position to run a paid-for event where the event can be solely presented by FITT, we will do so. If you can assist, please do let us know.

How to make the Net Work! FITT @ CeBIT 13th May
| At the glorious Harbours Edge venue near Sydney Convention centre, our special value-for-money FITT luncheon on How to make the Net Work attracted over 120 attendees for extended networking over a light lunch. We were very appreciative of the time our speakers spent with us: Kate Carruthers, Director, Digital Business Group and Karen Ganschow, Executive Director, Relationship Marketing, Telstra. Kate explored with us how you can use social media tools and some wise ‘rules of engagement’. Karen then highlighted how she uses social media tools to extend herself and what Telstra is doing in this space as a business. (Left to right, MC - Kerriann Tyson-Jones, Kate Carruthers, Karen Ganschow). |
|
| It was a great 2 hours and attendees either visited CeBIT exhibition before or after the FITT lunch event. One FITT member was even twittering about our event which provoked all sorts of fantastic responses on what FITT is all about! The raffle prizes were a bonus and were kindly donated by Gateau on the go, Rosa Roses, Telstra, Cliftons, Harbours Edge, CeBIT. Thanks to our sponsors Telstra, NetworkPR and Cliftons – FITT cannot provide these events to members without their support! |
