Finding a career in IT | Microsoft Virtual Training Days

Microsoft are a long time FitT Platinum Sponsor and we are really appreciative of their generous support of women in the ICT industry, which enable us to bring our events and programs to fruition.

We spoke to Preet Kaur, Technical Skills Lead within Marketing at Microsoft Australia, who wanted to promote the free Microsoft Virtual Training days to everyone, and tell us why she thinks it’s important to continually acquire new skills, especially at a time when we may be exploring new opportunities.

I am currently the Technical Skills Lead within Marketing at Microsoft Australia, managing our fundamental training programs across Azure, M365, Dynamics and Power Platform. Prior to this, I worked in a range of Marketing roles in both the IT and Oil & Gas sector.

After spending 5 years in the financial services sector, I realised that I needed to do something beyond numbers.

However my career started as an External Auditor working at Deloitte. After spending 5 years in the financial services sector, I realised that I needed to do something beyond numbers. I set out on a path without really knowing my end destination. What I did know was that I needed to pick up as many new and varied skills as I could. I did everything from auditing to data analysis, to a short stint in recruitment and then finally made my way into marketing. One common thread, among the variety of roles I held, was an ability to demonstrate and apply transferable skills.

The right skills go a long way in empowering us to seek out new opportunities.

This is why I am passionate about acquiring and seeking out opportunities to learn and evolve. My role as the Technical Skills lead helps me live and breathe this passion daily! In addition to that, one of my main goals this year is to encourage and pursue a diverse audience to participate and upskill via our training platform. The right skills go a long way in empowering us to seek out new opportunities. I can certainly vouch for this, being a woman in IT who found her way in based on skills that go beyond just my professional education in Accounting.

So, Please join Microsoft at an upcoming free Technical training, to kick start your next adventure within IT, or simply to build new skills which may open up some new doors.
